ABSTRAK TESISKU



ABSTRACT
The study investigates the implementation of School Based Curriculum (SBC), teachers’ and students’ responses toward SBC implementation particularly the evaluation system as suggested by the curriculum. The study uses a case study research design which employs multiple data collection techniques, i.e. class observation, questionnaire, interview, and document analysis. The students in the first, the second and the third grades at a private vocational school in Southern Bandung were chosen as the participants of the study along with the English teachers at the school. The obtained data were, then, analyzed based on the related theories on the language evaluation system which were validated by triangulation. The study revealed three findings related to the research questions. Firstly, results of the observation, interview, and document analysis showed that the concept of evaluation was various among teachers, but in  practice, it was quite similar. Secondly, as the interview data revealed, lack of facility, big number of the students in the class, and  less motivation among  students were often viewed as the main problems of the teachers faced in teaching relevant to SBC. However, interestingly, in the evaluation system, the teachers found no problem at all in their teaching. The result of the students’ questionnaire and interview indicated that English has  still been viewed as a difficult subject to master. At the same time, students had a great expectation on the teachers to change the view. They expected that the teaching learning should be more interesting by employing various techniques and media. Finally, despite some limitations, it can be said that the implementation of SBC in that school is in accordance with what the government has suggested through National Education Standard Bureau (BSNP). The findings also suggest that the teachers should be creative, innovative, and productive in designing an interesting teaching so that the students would feel enjoyable and convenient in learning.
