A long time ago, in Central Java, there was a beautiful princess named Rara Jonggrang. A powerful prince named Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. But Rara Jonggrang did not love him. To refuse him, she gave him an impossible task: to build 1,000 temples in one night.

With the help of spirits, Bandung Bondowoso almost finished the temples. Rara Jonggrang became worried. She ordered villagers to burn straw and pound rice to make it seem like morning had come. The spirits ran away, thinking the sun had risen. Bandung Bondowoso only completed 999 temples.

When he found out Rara Jonggrang had tricked him, he was very angry. He cursed her and turned her into the final statue, completing the 1,000 temples. Today, people believe that Rara Jonggrang’s statue stands in Prambanan Temple.
